snow
snow. 2014 Four color Lithograph print on Hosho. edition size: 2. size: 8" x 12"

All prints are hand printed lithographs and or woodcuts using traditional oil based inks on ph neutral paper. I ink each plate with one color and the colors are layered to create the image. My current series focus on nature and overlapping interdependent flow systems. The inherent transparent quality of japanese papers and the translucency of oil based inks allows these layers to be visually intertwined yet distinct.

buried scripts

buried scripts. 2005

One color Woodblock with painting. Monoprint on Hosho. edition size: 1. .
In "Printmaking on the Edge" published in
writes about my art work "Bakker...prefers to allow techniques to suggest themselves during the progression of the work. She agrees that this approach does contain within it a degree of risk, but maintains that an element of serenditipty is also possible." He also cites me explaining why woodcut is a good fit for my process "...a live material with its age recorded in its grain. To carve a still image of motion or to carve gestural scribble marks makes that which was once moving and growing as still and forever recorded as grain is in wood and as memories are in the mind."

found scribbles

found scribbles. 2004

Woodcut relief using baltic birch. edition size: 1. Installation measures apx 10ft x 4ft. . Large scale handcarved woodblocks. We unintentionally communicate our feelings and our humanity through marked physical expressions. I recorded found writing mistakes in the manner of written language as large scale woodblocks, and I refer to these suites of scribble woodcuts as sentences. These blocks were also used to create prints which I hand bound to create books.

dancing skins

dancing skins. 2001

Two color Woodblock print on Hosho. edition size: 5. Indivudual prints are 15" x 18" . These prints are part of a series called "Dancing Skins." where I followed an organic work process from drawing to print to sculpture to photography and then back to print.

self portrait woodcut

self portrait in woodcut. 2000

One color Woodblock print on Kitikata. edition size: 3. print measures 10" x 15" . When making a woodcut the negative space of the drawing is cut away. It is much easier to draw a line than to carve away everything but the line. The process of carving the drawing creates the printable matrix as well as adds the element of the wood grain to the image. Further the process requires you to consider all positive and negative space.
